Marriage in India can be registered under either Special Marriage Act, 1954 or Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. Special Marriage Act is applicable to all citizens of India and Hindu Marriage Act is applicable only to the Hindus. Marriage certificate is issued only if the marriage is registered with the sub-registrar office. A marriage certificate cannot be obtained in absentia, where the marriage has already taken place and was not registered at that point of time, both the applicant and spouse’s physical presence with the supporting documents are required for the registration. 

Documents Required to obtain Marriage Certificate from India

1. Identification proof (Aadhar card, Voter ID, Passport)

2. Affidavit from parents or relatives

3. Proof of age /date of birth

4. Marriage Photo

5. Letter from Priest (if available)
